Japan’s Ministry of Finance has proposed creating a unified digital manga platform that would allow international readers to access titles from multiple Japanese publishers in one place, with artificial intelligence (AI) translation playing a central role in expanding the industry’s global reach.

The goal of the proposal is to help Japanese publishing firms to exert competition over alternative overseas platforms and raise profits from foreign audiences while the matter also gives rise to concerns regarding the quality of manga created through AI translation, perspectives of professional localization services, and efficiency of the use of state funds in the operation.
